- W2006092073 abstract "Abstract The adsorption of K and Cl on Ag(100) has been investigated using LEED, Auger, XPS and TPD. The interaction on Cl alone with the Ag(100) surface is complex showing (i) AgCl crystallite formation at low temperatures (ii) sub-surface dissolution of Cl above 250 K (iii) reversible segregation of dissolved Cl above 600 K and (iv) AgCl desorption above 650 K. When K is coadsorbed with Cl several gross changes occur. Firstly, K induces surface AgCl crystallization at higher temperatures and prevents dissolution occuring until 400 K. The range of temperature of dissolution is further narrowed by lower temperature segregation in the presence of the alkali metal-beginning at about 550 K. Thus, the alkali metal has the effect of altering both the kinetics and thermodynamics of Cl interaction with Ag surface, enhancing its surface population with respect to the bulk. In the monolayer there is significant electrostatic interaction between chlorine and potassium evidenced by substantial shifting of Cl and K core levels.
