- W2006193782 abstract "Channels previously occupied by roots (biopores) may assist growth of roots through high-strength soils. This experiment was conducted to evaluate a method for determining the relationship between biopore frequency and root growth. Undisturbed cores were obtained from 5–10, 15–20, 25–30, and 35–40 cm depths of a conventionally tilled (CT) and a no-till (NT) Brown Chernozemic soil. The density distribution of small-diameter (200–500 μm), intermediate-diameter (500–1000 μm), and large-diameter (> 1000 μm) diameter pores was assessed visually. Pots containing wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) plants were placed on top of the cores and the number of roots that appeared at the bottom of the cores was measured after 120 and 168 h. Significantly fewer roots emerged from NT than from CT cores at all depths except 15–20 cm. Only pores in the 500–1000 μm (P-500) pore class correlated with root number. Root number correlated negatively with penetration resistance (PR). Path coefficient analysis revealed that the direct effects of P-500 pores and PR accounted for 24.7 and 19.3% of the variation in root number, respectively. The method described appears to be a useful tool for quantifying the relationship between pore density and root growth.
