- W2006205327 abstract "Frequency Doubling Technology (FDT) visual field has been shown to be effective in the screening for vision pathologies. The purpose of this study was to investigate FDT to identify early functional biomarkers of Alzheimer's disease (AD) in the absence of eye disease. It was not the intent to correlate the biomarker with severity of disease. The expectation of a screening using FDT is not that it will provide a differential diagnosis of eye disease or age related dementia, but will serve to determine need for further evaluations to diagnose either eye disease and/or neurodegenerative disease affecting visual pathways such as AD. Patients diagnosed with AD attending neurology clinics were screened. Adults accompanying patients were control participants. The screening included an ocular history, visual acuity and FDT. FDT has normative data as well as reliability findings regarding fixation loss, false positive and false negative in result printouts. A screening was considered a fail if any of the targets had a probability of P < 2% or two or more targets having a P < 5%. There were twenty reliable tests among the AD group. Seventeen of these reliable FDT tests from AD participants were failed FDT tests using the screening criteria. Ten FDT failures were not associated with any reported ocular pathology. This was confirmed by brief ophthalmoscopy assessment. Of eighteen controls screened with FDT, there was only one failed FDT. The AD group had a rate of reported ocular pathology of 44% and the control group had ocular related pathology at 22%." @default.
