- W2006207718 abstract "Being a physicist, it took me a long time to dare comment on Geertz's Distinguished Lecture: Anti Anti-Relativism (AA 86:263278, 1984). His is animus of a man on stump: Geertz's claim of not being a relativist, while defending relativism, recalls antiDemocrat harangue at 1984 Republican Convention by Ms. Jeane Kirkpatrick, then a Democrat. Thus one can claim objectivity and be plus-royaliste-que-le-roi. I expect that Geertz, like Kirkpatrick, will change parties soon; he has admitted being led into relativism, complexly (Geertz 1983:151). Also rhetorical is his nostra culpa: We have, no doubt, on occasion.... transformed idiosyncrasies into puzzles, puzzles into mysteries, and mysteries into humbug (p. 275). Naming nobody, he exculpates everybody. Geertz asserts relativists' pugnacity is but the expression of a perception . . . world being so full of a number of things, rushing to judgment is more than a mistake, it's a crime rather than self-evident proof' of relativists' fundamental inconsistency, as if arguing against a rush to judgment is sufficient to ensure one is ipso facto logically consistent, no matter what argument. Besides, what a gratuitous set-up of straw men! Who advocates a stampede to judgment? He scorns some, such as Melford Spiro, for criticizing relativism but late in life. Yet Geertz correctly highlights relativists' thou-shalt-not-judge stance." @default.
