The main focus is on fluorides because this ligand allows the facile assignment of the formal oxidation state. Both experimentally known compounds and quantum-chemical predictions have been considered. Questionable species in their highest oxidation states which have been reported in the past are also discussed. The trends along the main-group, transition-metal, lanthanides, and actinides series are reported and reasons for these observations have been provided.
