- W2006442987 abstract "With gains in life expectancy, a greater number of older adults will have dementia and will be in need of formal care services beyond what their families can deliver. Because of the difficulty in supporting people in this environment, residential care is likely to remain the backbone of services. Understanding how nursing staff perceive and act towards residents is crucial because it may directly affect quality of care delivered and thus quality of life (QoL) of residents. Unfortunately, in all health care sectors there is a general lack of interest to work in residential settings. This may be caused by less positive general attitudes to older people and jobs associated with caring for this portion of the population. Nursing staff provide the majority of direct care for institutionalised older adults with dementia and thus have the biggest impact on the QoL for these residents. QoL for vulnerable residents in residential is highly dependent on the well-being and continuity of their nursing staff. The role of front line staff in supporting the wellbeing of people in residential settings is paramount in delivering person centred care. Understanding the nursing teams' attitudes towards residents is essential to our understanding of the culture of care in residential homes. This paper presents a systemic review of nursing staff perception and attitudes towards older adults in residential settings. The aim is to describe where the gaps in our knowledge lie and what future research needs to be conducted to fill these gaps. Data Sources included Ageline, Medline, Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature, Web of Science, PsychINFO, PubMed and active researchers in this area from 1990 to present. Empirical studies are included that explored perspectives or attitudes held by nursing staff in residential care settings for older adults. Preliminary findings suggest that social and cultural aspects of teamwork and staff morale have strong influences on perception of residents. Attempts to improve staff attitudes should focus on creating organizational cultures that promote teamwork and high morale." @default.
