- W2006653523 abstract "The question that most preoccupied the attention of the Himalayan border states of Nepal, Sikkim and Bhutan in 1962 was that of survival-survival of political institutions under persistent attack from domestic critics as well as the survival of these states as autonomous political entities. The overriding consideration, whether concerning internal or external developments, was the all-pervading shadow of the Sino-Indian border dispute which, in the latter part of the year, erupted into an armed conflict that is yet far from settled and may eventually involve one or all of the border states directly. Internally, these states are passing through a critical transitional stagea period of rapid political, social and economic change. The strains, which would be overwhelming under the best of circumstances, are greatly exacerbated by the extensive Sino-Indian conflict. Indeed, so great are the pressures that few leaders in the border states exude much optimism when discussing the future. Doubtless, fear of China is uppermost in their minds, but apprehensions over Indian policy can also be perceived, for it is feared that New Delhi, faced with overt Chinese aggression, may feel impelled to intervene in the border states to safeguard its own vital interests. The desire to be left alone by both their powerful neighbors is overwhelming. How realistic this attitude may be is open to serious question." @default.
