- W2006799504 abstract "1. With a new and comparatively efficient one-dimensional thin-layer chromatographic method individual plasma phospholipids were determined in normal persons and in patients with cirrhoses and fatty livers. Variations of the individual phospholipids within the different groups were comparatively small. Comparisons carried out between these groups revealed significant differences. 2. With progressive liver damage first lysolecithin, then also lysocephalin decrease. Cases with the worst prognosis exhibit the lowest lysolecithin, lysocephalin and total phospholipid values. 3. Lecithin levels are, at least relatively, augmented in all cases of liver disease examined, while sphingomyelin is, at least relatively, lower. 4. Phosphatidylethanolamine is significantly increased, where normal liver cells are damaged and/or regenerating to a greater extent. This is usually in compensated cirrhoses and fatty liver, where phosphatidylethanolamine also shows a highly significant correlation with SGOT. Compared to these diseases, patients with decompensated cirrhosis, where much fewer normal cells exist and/or are regenerating or damaged, have significantly lower phosphatidylethanolamine values. 5. Phosphatidylserine and phosphatidylinositol are elevated in all groups of cirrhoses. An exception are patients without biliary stasis. 6. Alkaline phosphatase shows a positive correlation with relative amounts of phosphatidylinositol in compensated cirrhoses. 7. The reasons and the significance of the results obtained are discussed, especially in connection with clinical data, with experimental liver cell damage and with the possible value for clinical diagnoses in special cases. 8. This work seems indirectly to establish that phospholipids are important factors in pathogenesis of fatty liver and cirrhosis of liver and that plasma phospholipids reflect the changes of liver phospholipids in cirrhosis and fatty liver in a very distinct and characteristics fashion." @default.
