- W2006931215 abstract "1.1. The horse mussel, Modiolus modiolus (L.) has been found to be capable of aerial respiration.2.2. An increase in the temperature of exposure from 10.9 (the acclimation temperature) to 16.5°C resulted in a significant change in the relationship between respiratory rate and size: small mussels showed a decrease in rate and larger mussels an increase. A further increase (16.5–21.4°C) did not significantly alter this newly established relationship, and oxygen consumption only increased slightly.3.3. Although the heart rate is reduced during emersion there are short bursts of increased activity suggesting attempts to maintain an active rate of metabolism.4.4. The temperature independence of the respiratory rate of emersed Modiolus probably indicates a transition from predominantly aerobic to anaerobic respiration reflecting the inefficiency, in the absence of a flow of water across the gills, of the mantle surfaces as a site of respiratory exchange." @default.
