- W2007052920 abstract "To assess the relation between gestational weight gain of the mother and incident type 2 diabetes in the daughter. The Nurses' Health Study II is a prospective cohort study on women's health enrolled in 1989. In 2001, mothers of participants completed a detailed questionnaire regarding their pregnancy with their nurse daughter. We related gestational weight gain reported by the mother to incident type 2 diabetes diagnosed between 1989 to 2001 among NHS II participants. We ascertained 400 cases of type 2 diabetes during 348,174 person-years of follow-up. Gestational weight gain of less than 15 lbs was associated with an increased risk of type 2 diabetes, compared with women who gained 15-19 lbs. The risk was highest among women whose mothers gained less than 10 lbs (age-adjusted HR 2.85, 95% CI 1.85-4.39), but was also present for those whose mothers gained 10-14 lbs (age-adjusted HR 1.52, 95% CI 1.06-2.18). This dose-dependent risk remained significant in a multivariate model controlling for preterm birth, parental BMI, family history of diabetes, childhood socioeconomic status, and intra-pregnancy risk factors (< 10 lbs gain: HR 2.15, 95% CI 1.38-3.36, 10-14 lbs gain: HR 1.52, 95% CI 1.06-2.19). Higher weight gains were not associated with diabetes risk. Adding the birth weight of the NHS II participant to the model did not materially modify the association (< 10 lbs gain: HR 1.99, 95% CI 1.27-3.11, 10-14 lbs gain: HR 1.46, 95% CI 1.01-2.10). We found that low gestational weight gain was associated with an increased risk of type 2 diabetes in offspring, independent of birth weight. These findings suggest that normal birth weight infants born to mothers with very low gestational weight gain may face an increased risk of type 2 diabetes." @default.
