- W200710011 abstract "This chapter discusses the factors required for photoactivation of the latent oxygen-evolving system. Photoactivation, the activation of the latent oxygen-evolving activity by light, is a phenomenon widely observed for various photosynthetic organisms from blue–green algae to higher plants. One of the conspicuous characteristics of this process is that it is a multi-quantum process. As for photoactivation in intact chloroplasts, it was observed that typical inhibitors for ATP synthesis such as N, ν´-dicyclo-hexylcarbodiimid), oligomycin, gramicidin D, methylamine, and NH4CI did not affect photoactivation at all. Although A23187 affected photoactivation, this cannot be because of its uncoupling action, as the inhibition was reversed by exogenous Mn. Thus, as far as photoactivation in intact chloroplasts from flash-grown leaves is concerned, photophosphorylation and/or pH gradient formation does not appear to be essential for the process." @default.
