- W2007132275 abstract "School systems across the country are experiencing an unprecedented push to form collaboratives with institutions in their larger communities to achieve educational reforms aimed at dropout prevention. This push has been well documented by Levine (1988), McMullan (1987), and the Institute of Educational Leadership (1986). Nationwide, over 140,000 school-community collaboratives have been formed-a 60% increase in collaborative activity since 1983 (Evans, 1988). According to Fantini (1985) and Passow (1985), educators, policymakers, parents and other members of the school establishment generally recognize that only through collaboration, that is, schools working with other institutions to address common areas of concern, can the multitude of student and school needs be adequately addressed. Examples of collaboratives have come to fruition with partnerships between schools and the business community, the higher education community, the mass media and information sector (i.e., television and radio, libraries and museums), the parent community, and nonprofit community-based organizations (CBOs). The present article focuses on the latter type of collaboration, that between schools and nonprofit CBOs; specifically, on the impact of school-CBO collaboration on dropout prevention programming and staff-student relations. According to Lieberman (1986), despite the growth of collaboratives between schools and nonprofit CBOs, little attention has been paid to the overall effectiveness of these collaboratives. School-business collaboratives, on the other hand, have received tremendous attention. Moreover, little attention has been paid to distinguishing between the different types of CBOs that exist (e.g., indigenous versus exogenous). The findings from the study described herein indicate that the establishment of these distinctions are important. Additionally, some nonprofit CBOs are more suited to particular school collaborative efforts than others." @default.
