- W2007226255 abstract "In recent months, we have looked at aspects of the CLIMB (Collaboration, Leadership, Innovation, Mentorship, and Balance) template for achieving success in our profession and throughout society. While CLIMB will always be an aspirational goal, many members of our Academy have reached the pinnacle and show us what we can all accomplish. In the field of education, few if any Academy members have risen higher than Judith L. Bonner, PhD, RD, who in 2012 was named the 28th president of the University of Alabama. Bonner is the first woman to hold the position of permanent president in the university's history. A news article upon her appointment quoted the university's student government president as saying he “couldn't think of anyone better for the presidency.” Mary Story, PhD, RD, is a professor of global health and community and family medicine at Duke University, and previously was professor of epidemiology and community health in the School of Public Health at the University of Minnesota. She is the director of the national program office for the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Healthy Eating Research program. At the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Ann Albright, PhD, RD, directs the Division of Diabetes Translation. She formerly headed the California Department of Health Services' Diabetes Program and led the US Secretary of Health and Human Services' Diabetes Detection Initiative while serving as an advisor in the Office of the Surgeon General. Among our most publicly visible members is Joy L. Bauer, MS, RD, CDN, the nutrition expert for NBC's Today show and the co-host of the RLTV show Good Food, Good Deeds. Also bringing healthful-eating messages to worldwide audiences are Ellie Krieger, MS, RDN, host of the Food Network's Healthy Appetite; and Kathleen Zelman, MPH, RD, LD, nutrition director for WebMD and an outstanding representative of more than 100 registered dietitian nutritionists who have served as Academy Spokespeople since our unequalled media outreach program debuted in 1982. Susan T. Borra, RD, has more than 30 years of leadership in the food retailing and production industries, including at the International Food Information Council and at the Food Marketing Institute, where she is senior vice president for Communications and Strategic Planning. Susan Finn, PhD, RD, FAND, held leadership positions at Ross Products (now Abbott Nutrition), including director of Nutrition Services and Public Affairs; is a recognized leader and communicator on nutrition and health; and brings her expertise as a speaker to health and nutrition professionals and medical societies around the world. My Arizona colleague and mentor Anita Owen, MA, RDN, has been setting the standard for excellence in the public and community health arena for decades. She was one of the prime movers behind the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) program. Recognized nationally for her countless contributions to nutrition education, child nutrition, and school and community wellness, Judith L. Dodd, MS, RDN, LDN, FAND, has combined her expertise as an author, consultant, and public speaker with roles in private industry (Giant Eagle supermarkets) and higher education (University of Pittsburgh). I know few Academy members whose advocacy and enthusiasm for our profession and service to our Academy matches that of Margaret L. Bogle, PhD, RD. Her contributions date to the 1960s when she served on the Dietetic Internship Board. Then she chaired the Committee on Professional Registration and the former Council on Practice. Her groundbreaking work in credentialing moved our organization forward in the areas of Registration, Fellow Recognition, and Specialty Certification. Marjorie Clark, of Los Gatos, CA, celebrated her 100th birthday in February, surrounded by friends and family, including her niece, Academy member Martha Marino, MA, RD, CD. She first joined the Academy in 1940 and worked for decades as a dietitian in clinical, education, and public health settings, including on the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES). “She has always had a healthy diet, which may in part be the reason she's lived so long!” says her niece. These members are “at the table,” taking risks and reaping rewards for dietetics and beyond. Space has permitted naming only a few, but there are dozens where each of these talented members came from, in every practice area—and there is room in our profession for thousands more." @default.
