- W2007260301 abstract "SYNOPSIS It is sometimes suggested that the excreta of predators could be used to protect crops or plantations against large herbivore damage. This study tested whether antelope and rodents tend to avoid felid urine. Captive Cape grysbok and grey duiker sniffed significantly more frequently at leopard (Panthera pardus) and caracal (Felis caracal) urine than at urine from laboratory rats and domestic sheep. However the leopard and carcal urine elicited no alarm response and did not significantly inhibit feeding when compared with the control urine. The rodents Rhabdomys pumilio and Otomys irroratus did not discriminate between live traps scented with caracal urine and control traps scented with sheep urine. Predator urine therefore seems to hold little promise for use as a repellent. The results do not support the hypothesis that mammals have an inherent tendency to avoid predator odours." @default.
