The lifetime of the building stock is around 80 years, so decisions about constructing new houses, or retrofitting existing houses, have important environmental and economic consequences. The decision to demolish or renovate must also be considered alongside initiatives aimed at fostering social and cultural sustainability. There is growing evidence that the physical aspects of housing and the indoor environment have a direct impact on health through a variety of mechanisms. A number of recent studies have shown that housing interventions to improve thermal properties of the house, and its heating and ventilation have positive impacts on the health of occupants, particularly children and older people and this research has had an impact on policy in a number of countries. Local and central governments have an important role in determining the location and density of housing, as these decisions affect households’ transport costs and have an effect on their level of physical activity and obesity, as well as having long-term consequences for carbon emissions. There is a need for more research to quantify these co-benefits of housing interventions on health and carbon reductions, if more rounded and sustainable housing policies are to be implemented." @default.
