- W2007384489 abstract "A viral RNA polymerase has been observed in cells infected by the RNA-containing coliphage f2. In normal infection, the enzyme appears at 10 minutes and increases until 20–25 minutes. This time is before the synthesis of the majority of the viral RNA and mature phage. Using a histidine-less bacterium and chloramphenicol, it is shown that the increase in enzyme activity is dependent on continued protein synthesis. Two host-dependent suppressor-sensitive phage mutants make abnormal amounts of polymerase. Both make twice the normal level in the permissive bacterium. One makes no polymerase in one nonpermissive host but eight times normal in another. The second induces excess enzyme in both nonpermissive hosts. It is postulated that in normal infection only input RNA strands are templates for enzyme synthesis, while in the nonpermissive strains infected by the mutants some of the progeny RNA are used. This is supported by the fact that in normal infection the polymerase is synthesized in normal amounts even though RNA synthesis is markedly reduced by uracil or adenine starvation, or by base analogs. Under these conditions the enzyme level in mutant infected cells is reduced to wild-type level." @default.
