- W2007455809 abstract "This paper investigates realism both as an artistic attitude within the arts, and more specifically in relation to Lloyd Newson’s Enter Achilles. There is initially a discussion of realism, focusing on the theories of Lukács and Brecht in relation to art, and an attempt to relate these ideas more specifically to dance. Discussion of Enter Achilles reveals the underlying issues that are conveyed through the work, and highlights the way in which Newson’s piece is a reflection of society as he has experienced it. Further exploration of the work enables identification of aspects within it that demonstrate realist tendencies, and these are related back to the theoretical positions of Lukács and Brecht. It is concluded that Enter Achilles can be considered a realist work that is both accurate and insightful in its representation of social reality, and that it demonstrates aspects of both Lukács’ and Brecht’s realist theories. Realism n. 1. (usu. opp. IDEALISM) 1. the practice of regarding things in their true nature, and dealing with them as they are; practical views and policy. 2. fidelity of representation, truth to nature, insistence upon details; the showing of life as it is without glossing over what is ugly or painful.
