- W2007496034 abstract "A quantitative thermodynamic model has been established to investigate the evolution mechanism from quantum dot (QD) to quantum ring (QR) during the capping process. Taking the Ge/Si system as an example, we found that there is a critical concentration of Ge required in QDs in order for Si absorption by QDs to take place. When the Ge concentration of QDs decreases to that critical concentration during the Si capping process, Si atoms deposited on the surface of the QDs cannot be absorbed by the QDs and prefer to diffuse to the base side of the QDs. The accumulation of Si atoms on the base side of the QDs results in a great gradient of Ge composition on the surface of the QDs, which leads to the migration of Ge atoms from the top region of the QDs to the base side of the QDs. As a result, the QDs finally evolve into ringlike structures. Importantly, these theoretical results are in good agreement with experiments, which implies that our investigations not only offer general insight into the basic physics involved in QR formation during the capping process, but also provide useful information for experimenters." @default.
