- W2007555889 abstract "G lial cells of the central nervous system (CNS) include cells of astrocytic, oligodendroglial, ependymal, and choroid plexus origin. Astrocytes perform a variety of structural, barrier, and repair functions in the CNS. While they may be subclassified based on appearance and function, most share common features of a lightly staining oval nucleus and prominent fibrillary processes. Oligodendrogliocytes are small cells with uniform, darkly staining round nuclei and inapparent cell processes. They are diffusely distributed in the brain, but as the myelinating cell of the CNS, they are the principal cells in the white matter. Ependymal cells line ventricular surfaces, where they form a partial cerebrospinal fluid (CSF)-brain barrier. The cells are cuboidal, with uniform oval nuclei. They are ciliated, and also function to promote CSF circulation. The choroid plexus is a specialized derivative of ependyma that is responsible for CSF production. The choroid plexus epithelium lines papillary fronds that are attached to ventricular surfaces by fibrovascular stalks. Unlike other glial cells, the principal intermediate filament is keratin, rather than glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP). Glial neoplasms arise from each of these cell types. An understanding of the unique biology and anatomy of these tumors is essential for effective management. It is the capacity to proliferate and create a space-occupying mass, to infiltrate or seed eloquent and vital structures, and, of particular interest to the therapist, to resist radiation and chemotherapy, which determines the behavior of the glioma.
