- W2007605086 abstract "Glutaraldehyde-reacted polyethyleneimine (PEI-G) is a more hydrophobic cationic polymer than polyethyleneimine (PEI). This gives rise to significantly different adsorption modes of water-dissolved PEI-G and PEI on polyethylene (PE) and mica substrates, particularly around pH 9, as shown by means of ESCA. On PE, a relatively thick and coherent adsorbate of PEI-G forms and the adsorption is apparently irreversible. The numbers of surface carboxyls and ammonium groups are comparable and the extremely low desorption rate observed in 0.1 M NaOH indicates that hydrophobic attraction is an important driving force for adsorption. Also, the electrostatic bonds to the surface carboxyls may be shielded from water contact by the interior lipid-like part of the PEI-G film. Toward the water phase, the PEI-G film appears to expose hydrophilic groups as indicated by contact angle measurements and angular-dependent ESCA studies. On mica, this kind of (thick) PEI-G adsorbate structure is less easily developed because of conformational restrictions caused by the larger number of electrostatic bonds." @default.
