- W2007605196 abstract "Transformations can take place at the organizational and personal level. This article is about both. It presents the narratives of the careers of Canadian swimmers with a disability who, through their training and hard work, went from being defined as persons with disabilities to become Paralympians, as the sport system of Paralympic Games swimming changed from being disability-based to sport-based. Their stories are similar to athletes in other countries who compete in the global Paralympic Games system, but with one difference, this sport events take place without the use of high tech wheelchair equipment and prostheses, as in athletics. Athletes compete with unadorned bodies in the water of the pool, and the pool is also transformative in its own way, allowing for mobility and movement that gravity on dry land does not sustain." @default.
