- W2007607202 abstract "Recent empirical research on married couples in Britain demonstrates the persistence of gender inequalities in marriage (Dryden, 1999; Jamieson, 1998). This supports the view of many western feminist theorists who have long located marriage and the family as a potential site of women’s subordination (Brah, 1996). Black feminists, however, have criticized (white) western feminism for claiming to speak for all women and, in the process, reproducing regulatory and racist discourses that pathologize black women and their families (Brah, 1996; Mirza, 1997). They maintain that, largely, the experiences of minority ethnic or ‘third world’ women have been invisible or viewed within stereotypical constructions (Mirza, 1997). Furthermore, it is claimed that alternative arguments are possible – for example, that families, consolidated through cultural traditions such as marriage, have provided some minority ethnic people with a refuge from racism faced in mainstream society (Phoenix, 1997).1 In this short article, I will review some existing literature on South Asian women’s marriage experiences.2 In the first part, I will argue that the majority of research on South Asian women has served to support stereotypes of their passivity, and binary distinctions between supposedly ‘traditional’ and ‘modern’ women. In the second part, I will argue for the need to also examine these concepts in relation to South Asian married women’s experiences through an exploration of ‘space’ and ‘embodiment’. My identity as a South Asian feminist means that I am aware of the danger of stereotyping minority ethnic women’s experiences of marriage. At the same time, however, I am faced constantly with the dilemma of whether my research perpetuates these stereotypes. However, my feminist identity has helped me to" @default.
