The L. garovaglii complex itself, centered around L. garovaglii (Kibrber) Zahlbr. (syn. L. peruviana (Miill. Arg.) Zahlbr.), includes materialfirst described as L. cascadensis Magnusson (syn. L. nevaden- sis Magnusson), which differs mainly by disc colors and epihymenial characters often modified by light conditions and parasitism. As treated in this article, L. garovaglii s.l. also includes several overlapping cortical chemotypes. A second complex centers around two new (previously misidentified as L. cascadensis or other taxa). Lecanora sierrae Ryan & Nash, found mainly at high elevations in California, and Lecanora pseudomellea Ryan, found mainly at intermediate elevations in the Northwest, are new species, treated broadly to include a typical medullary chemotype (fatty acids only) but also chemotypes containing in addition either pannarin or psoromic acid. This is one in a series of articles dealing with Lecanora sect. Placodium (Pers.) Mann emend. Poelt, a group characterized by having an areolate- squamulose to lobate or subfoliose thallus, usually with a true cortex and relatively loose medulla. The relationships of this section to other members of Lecanora subg. Placodium are presented briefly by Ryan and Nash (1993b). As described in that article, section Placodium is represented in North America by three informally defined species groups cen- tered around: 1) L. muralis (Schreber) Rabenh. (Ryan & Nash, in prep.), 2) L. laatokkaensis (Risinen) Poelt (Ryan & Nash 1993a), and 3) L. garovaglii (K6rber) Zahlbr. The present article focuses on the third group, with emphasis on a complex of pre- viously undescribed taxa endemic to western North America. The group of lobate centered around L. garovaglii are distinguished from the rest of the sec- tion by their typically inflated or sinuous-plicate lobes. In contrast to the upper cortex of L. muralis, the type of section Placodium, the cortex of the L. garovaglii group lacks distinct conical bundles of hyphae. The L. garovaglii group consists of two complexes, which differ by a combination of morphological and chemical features. The L. garovaglii complex itself (including L. cas- cadensis Magnusson and L. nevadensis Magnusson) is treated relatively briefly in this article, as a single common widespread and extremely variable taxon," @default.
