- W2007707745 abstract "Aging in the laboratory animal is studied not only to increase knowledge of its fundamental aspects but also for comparative purposes. The aging process must be regarded as a dynamic process which can be studied in the mammalian species by essentially two types of investigation: cross-sectional and longitudinal studies. In cross-sectional studies, groups of various ages are examined and age-related differences are sought. In longitudinal studies, serial prospective measurements are carried out in one group of subjects at predetermined intervals. There are advantages and disadvantages to each method and these have been reviewed by Rowe [l] for man. One of the primary goals of aging research is to gain an understanding of the underlying mechanisms of aging in order to find means for preventing or ameliorating ailments of old age before functional decline becomes clinically apparent." @default.
