- W2007816304 abstract "The connection between inelastic and elastic nuclear scattering of strongly absorbed particles in the adiabatic approximation has recently been established by Austern and Blair. In the present paper this relation is made more explicit by employing the strong absorption model assumption of Frahn and Venter for the elastic scattering coefficients ηl. By means of suitable approximations we obtain simple closed expressions for the inelastic scattering cross section which are analogous to the strong absorption model formulae for elastic scattering. The results demonstrate the effects on the inelastic angular distributions of (i) the multipolarity of the excited nuclear state, (ii) the smooth transition of ηl in l-space, (iii) the Coulomb interaction, and (iv) the imaginary part of ηl. It is shown that the Blair rule is generally valid for single excitation of collective nuclear states in the adiabatic approximation. The approximate expressions are compared with typical experimental data for alpha particle scattering, and satisfactory simultaneous fits of the inelastic angular distributions are obtained." @default.
