- W2007870910 abstract "When electrolyte solutions contact activated carbon, the solute can simultaneously adsorb on the surface and be excluded from the liquid near the liquid-solid interface. In general agreement with earlier work, it is shown that (1) both cation and anion adsorb, and (2) the order of adsorption for cations is H+ > Al3+ > Ca2+ > Li+, Na+, K+; for anions, NO3− > Cl−. Adsorption can be suppressed with the addition of HCl, thereby isolating the exclusion, or negative adsorption, effect. There is a slight tendency for the ions which hydrate least to be excluded from the surface region least, in qualitative agreement with the exclusion effect observed earlier in silica gel-electrolyte solution systems. While a “geometric effect” (found in systems in which a large area bounds a unit volume of solution) seems to play a role in both silica gel and carbon systems, there may be an additional reason for exclusion in activated carbon systems, such as the existence of a solvent layer on the surface of the solid. The exclusion effect was also found when a nonporous, high area channel black was used. Thus, the effect is an area, and not uniquely a pore, phenomenon." @default.
