- W2007871306 abstract "It is particularly essential that we now direct our attention to the function of language because it is becoming more and more obvious that ideas are weapons and that all teachers must help children to acquire ideas, to weigh them, and to communicate them, if the countries of the world are not to be at each other's throats every twenty-five years. We must make children aware of their responsibilities in the world of nations, and we must help them to understand one another's aims and problems and, after under tanding them, to derive a rational basis for resolving the tensions and conflicts which force people to wage war upon each other rather than upon those obstacles which stand in the way of man's further progress. These things can be accomplished only through the arts of communication; for it was this art which raised men above the level of beasts, and this same tool can now undo what centuries of social evolution have accomplished. In surveying the advances which have been made in the field of language arts, one is immediately struck by the extremely radical break with tradition which was evidenced during the past twenty-five years." @default.
