- W2007873863 abstract "WHITE Leghorn chickens show peak weights of the bursa of Fabricius by the 4th to 6th week of age. Regression begins soon after the peak level is reached and is complete soon after puberty (Glick, 1956). Kirkpatrick and Andrews (1944) in pheasants and Glick (1957) in chickens have demonstrated that regression of the bursa can be speeded by administration of gonadal hormones. The action of steroid hormones on lymphoid tissues is well documented in the literature (see Dougherty, 1952, for a review). Recently, Meyer, Rao and Aspinall (1959a, b) have reported the effects of steroid hormones on the development of lymphoid tissues in chicken embryos. Their work demonstrates that 19-nortestosterone and related analogs (Aspinall et al., 1959) not only inhibit the growth and development of the bursa of Fabricius, but also retards the development of other lymphoid tissues. Chang et al. (1955, 1957, 1958) have surgically demonstrated that the bursa …" @default.
