- W2007895327 abstract "The operation of nuclear power plants is limited by the properties of their steel pressure vessels. Of particular concern is the ductile-to-brittle transition temperature of the steel and how it is affected by irradiation. The current technique for assessing the effects of irradiation ignores two facts: 1. the maximum fluence is imposed on the inner surface and 2. the thick-walled vessel is self-shielding. When these facts are considered, the predicted maximum 30 ft lb CV temperature of the pressure vessel is near 150°F for a fluence of 6 × 1019 neutrons/cm2 (> 1 MeV). Further, the maximum 30 ft lb temperature occurs at a location about 2 in. below the inner surface. The weld metal, which does not exhibit the through-the-thickness variation in toughness, may have the highest 30 ft lb CV temperature, and this will be at the inner surface." @default.
