- W2008013802 abstract "There is a growing interest for thin film coatings suitable for dry machining technologies which display both high hardness and low friction properties. TiBN coatings are multiphase coatings and can be deposited such they contain the two hard phases TiB2 and TiN, and in addition the soft and lubricating hexagonal BN phase. By a suitable choice of the relative content of these phases it is expected to obtain a hard and self-lubricating coating. Three types of coatings were synthesised: (i) homogeneous multiphase TiBN coatings by reactive sputtering from a TiB2 target, (ii) coatings of the same type in which carbon ions have been implanted (TiBNC) and (iii) multilayer coatings of the sequence TiN/hBN/TiB2 by sequential sputtering from Ti, BN and TiB2 targets with the same phase content as the homogeneous coatings. Friction tests were carried out using both the pin-on-disk and pin-on-flat geometry with a 100Cr6 steel ball as the counterface. Hardness measurements were made using a nanoindenter. Contrary to expectations, both homogeneous TiBN and TiN/hBN/TiB2 multilayer coatings did not display a self-lubricating effect, and friction coefficients of about 0.8 were observed. TiBNC coatings did, however, display friction coefficients as low as 0.2." @default.
