- W2008070832 abstract "The effectiveness of cerebral imaging in depicting the structural and functional abnormalities associated with HE is well established as a clinical and experimental tool and still is undergoing further refinement. There are definite findings on certain neuroimaging tests that typically are found in cirrhotic patients such as pallidal hyperintensity on MR; altered cerebral neurotransmitter activity, cerebral blood flow, and metabolism on PET and SPECT; as well as detection of minimal HE on MRS. However, it appears that functional imaging using functional MR, PET, or SPECT is able to provide information to help elucidate the pathophysiologic mechanism of HE. SPECT and PET, however, provide more information about pathophysiologic mechanisms of HE because these imaging techniques use ligands that are better able to define the mechanisms of this complex disorder. SPECT is limited by its inferior resolution and prolonged decay times with certain ligands in comparison with PET. Therefore, PET has much promise for the continued investigation of HE, but its use in clinical medicine at present is limited by the cost of the procedure." @default.
