- W200807341 abstract "It is well established that many aqueous colloidal systems and even biological organisms exhibit more or less pronounced breaks in their physico-chemical properties at about the characteristic temperatures 15°, 30°, 45°, and 60°C. This phenomenon is ascribed to structural phase transitions of boundary water in the systems. In view of the gap in the understanding of the underlying mechanism, calorimetric tests employing differential scanning calorimetry (DSC-2, Perkin Elmer) were carried out with porous discs pressed from silica particles and wetted with various aqueous electrolyte solutions. The reference sample was a silica discs wetted with pure water. It could be demonstrated that pure water on a silica discs shows no thermal effect at the characteristic temperatures; but aqueous electrolyte solutions as the adsorbed phase display enthalpy changes at about these temperatures, according to water structure affecting ability of the ions." @default.
