- W2008129407 abstract "The increasing availability of micro computers provides an opportu nity to improve college education. In examining potential applications of the computer in the college curriculum, however, it is necessary to have a theory based framework for making decisions about the computer's usefulness. This article recommends using academic learning as the major factor in deciding whether or how to introduce the computer into the curriculum of a particular subject. Academic learning (Caldwell, Huitt, and Graeber 1982, Berliner 1984) is defined as the amount of learning a student spends attending to relevant academic tasks while performing those tasks with a high rate of success. In any designated subject, this variable is likely to be more strongly related to academic success than any other variable over which the teacher can exercise control. In college instruction, we can assume that students learn efficiently to the ex tent that they turn their and into academic learning time. Neither class time nor study time automat ically qualifies as academic learning time, but both may become academic learning to the extent that the learner spends either of them actively attending to relevant tasks with a high rate of success. Simply stated, in most" @default.
