- W2008129842 abstract "Multiphase compound crumb rubber modified asphalt (MCCRMA) is made from incorporating waste tire powder into base asphalt by grinding the mixture thoroughly in a colloid mill. Two percent (2%) styrene-butadiene-styrene block copolymer (SBS) modifier is added during grinding and the mixture is allowed to develop over a period of time. The high and low temperature characteristics and the anti-fatigue performance of the asphalt have been improved by adding waste tire rubber powder. Building roads and bridges with this new material of MCCRMA benefits our efforts in fighting pollution caused by waste tires. Consuming a large amount of waste tires in making MCCRMA is also good for China's circular economy. The microstructures of rubber particles and MCCRMA as well as the interfaces between modifier and the base asphalt have been examined by Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM). Well defined interfaces between modifier and the base asphalt are observed. The studies reveal that modified asphalt properties are dependent on size and concentration of rubber particles. Penetration, softening point, ductility and rotary viscosity of the crumb rubber modified asphalt decrease with rubber particle size when the concentration of crumb rubber powder is kept constant. If the average size of crumb rubber particles is kept unchanged, the penetration of the modified asphalt decreases with the crumb rubber powder concentration. On the contrary, the softening point, rotary viscosity, elastic recovery and ductility of the modified asphalt increase with the crumb rubber powder concentration." @default.
