- W2008162202 abstract "Abstract The objective of this study was to develop an improved understanding of mechanisms of fire suppression by studying diffusion-flame extinction in the presence of suppressive agents. Fuels studied were methanol, haptane, and wood. Suppressants considered were water and nitrogen. The configuration studied was the counterflow diffusion flame produced by directing an oxidizing gas stream, containing the suppressant, downward onto the burning surface of a condensed fuel. Data include concentration profiles (obtained by sampling and gas chromatographic analysis), temperature profiles (measured with thermocouples), and extinction conditions (in terms of suppressant content and flow rate of oxidizer). Overall rate parameters for the gas-phase combustion of these fuels were obtained through evaluation of a critical Damko¨hler number for extinction. The influence of water on flame extinction was observed to be thermal. It is suggested that the extinction mechanisms for gas-phase diffusion flames above cellulosic fuels are similar to those observed for liquid fuels." @default.
