- W2008295598 abstract "Compilation of rocket measurements of the electron concentration Ne in the upper D-region confirms the conclusion that summer Ne values are lower than winter values and that there is strong day-to-day variability of Ne, in winter. The nature of seasonal and day-to-day variations is considered from the point of view of the effective recombination coefficient αeff through variations of the ion composition. It is shown that there exists a strong seasonal variation of f+ (ratio of clustered to normal ions), this parameter being higher in summer than in winter at a fixed altitude. This fact leads to higher values of αeff in summer, and thus can be considered as the main reason for the regular seasonal variations in Ne, as well as the day-to-day changes. The positive ion composition of the upper D-region depends on meteorological parameters (temperature, humidity) and consequently meteorological control of the D-region can be realized through the effective recombination coefficient." @default.
