- W2008298936 abstract "Time-resolved laser-induced fluorescence (LIF) of He(23S) and emission spectroscopy of the N2+(B) first negative system are used in a parallel-plates RF post-discharge of He-N2/O2 to study the Penning ionization mechanism in this device. The LIF technique and a theoretical model for its interpretation are discussed in detail. Langmuir probe measurements are also presented to corroborate and enrich the experimental data. The main results are: (i) most of the N2+(B) excitation is due to He(23S) Penning ionization; (ii) in pure helium and mixtures of low N2 content the He(23S)/He density ratio is of the order of 10-5; (iii) it is very likely that, at low N2 content, the Penning ionization contributes significantly to the discharge ionization balance; and (iv) a measurement of the rate coefficients for quenching of He(23S) by N2 and O2 Penning ionization is given, that agrees very well with literature data." @default.
