• W2008342240 abstract "Early “information source” studies presumed that exposure to media led to attitudes and behaviors. Some research today still makes that presumption. However, recent research suggests that motivations within individuals—interests, knowledge, attitudes, etc.—lead to the selection of information sources. Using two topics—“sports” and “what’s going on in the community”—along with motivation variables—involvement, interest and information-seeking—this study examined how these motivations related to how useful people thought various media were for each topic. Sources included traditional media (TV, papers, etc.) along with newer technologies (cellular phone, personal computer and on-line services). There is some support for the hypothesis, but not a one-to-one correspondence between motivation variables and usefulness of sources. There is more likely to be a relation for traditional media than new technologies, and there is variation by topic. However, the overall picture is that of a set of motivation variables that are important. In addition, this study suggests that perceptions of traditional media and new technologies are different. The authors suggest that this difference may be because new technologies are employed differently to access information." @default.
