- W2008351630 abstract "Summary The infectability of normal human nasopharyngeal epithelial cells by EB virus has been investigated using a new culture method in which the cells grow in proliferating sheets shedding large, flat, differentiated cells into the medium. Cultures from five different biopsy samples were exposed to the virus by rocking in a virus preparation on one occasion, or by adding virus to the medium daily for several weeks, or by co-cultivation with lethally X-irradiated virus-producing lymphoid cells. There was no evidence of virus-induced transformation, expression of EB virus nuclear antigen or production of EB-virus capsid antigen (VCA), in any uninoculated control or test cell sheets. However, a small number of cells shed from the sheets from one biopsy showed definite VCA staining after co-cultivation with virus-producing cells, and electron microscopy of parallel samples revealed cytoplasmic herpesvirus nucleocapsids beside bundles of keratin. The significance of this EB-virus production by such squamous epithelial cells is discussed." @default.
