- W2008384808 abstract "Some reproductive medicine clinics in the United States accept donations of fertility medications and donate the drugs to patients in need. Reasons are mostly financial, as medication cost can be prohibitive for some patients. Review of available literature regarding practice and policy of donated medications reveals sparse information. To study knowledge of legislature regarding these practices as well as the practice itself could yield valuable information about how to best help patients in the future. To characterize the nature and extent of programs related to “recycling,” “repository” or “redistribution” of unused fertility medications in U.S. reproductive medicine clinics as well as physician knowledge of state legislation regarding these practices. A web-based survey was sent to all U.S. reproductive medicine clinic Medical Directors registered with the Society for Assisted Reproductive Technology (SART). The survey consisted of six to thirteen questions, depending on answer choices. The University of Oklahoma Institutional Review Board approved this study. Frequency data as well as comparisons were analyzed with chi-squared or Fischer exact tests where applicable. Statistical analyses were performed with SAS version 9.3. Of the 391 programs, 106 responses were obtained (27% response rate). Seventy-two of 101 respondents (71%) stated they redistributed medications in their clinics. Significantly more respondents who accepted and/or donated medications were from private practice groups as compared to academic practices (p=0.03), and were more likely to be from smaller physician groups (p=0.02). The majority of respondents (58%) stated they did not have knowledge of state laws regarding donated medications. Physicians who were unaware of state legislature were significantly more likely to accept and redistribute medications (p=<0.001). Physicians who reported awareness of state legislation were not significantly more likely to have a policy (p=0.47) or protocol (p=0.29) in place for medication donation as compared to physicians who did not report awareness to state legislation. Physicians reporting awareness of local legislation were also significantly less likely to have bookkeeping or tracking methods in place as compared to physicians not reporting awareness of state laws (p=0.03). Many reproductive clinics accept donations of fertility medications and redistribute them to patients in need. Many are unaware of state legislature regarding medication reuse and do not have policies, protocols or tracking methods in place. More information is needed to establish systems which improve practitioner awareness, benefit patients, and are approved by state legislatures and other involved groups." @default.
