• W2008386287 abstract "Abstract In order to investigate the problems that have contributed to the precipitous postindependence decline of Guyana's rice industry, this research supplemented previous fieldwork with 89 randomly collected questionnaires. The interrelationships underlying the categorical data on production changes, and the types of problems confronting rice farmers, were obtained with log-linear analysis. The log-linear models from three- and four-dimensional tables provide results demonstrating that Guyana's rice industry deteriorated because of the cumulative adverse impacts of recurring drainage, irrigation and flood control problems, and periodic crop damage caused by pests and diseases. The frequency and magnitude of water control problems seriously affect all rice cultivators irrespective of their farm size, age, socioeconomic status and educational attainment. Farmers blamed the repeated flooding of their fields on inadequately maintained and defective water control infrastructure, claiming that the government, in the post-independence period, instituted policies that deliberately discriminated against rice farmers." @default.
