Papers published in the Proceedings are abridged because presenting papers at their full length could preclude subsequent journal publication. ArticlesEXAMINING THE EXCHANGE IN LEADER-MEMBER EXCHANGE (LMX): IDENTIFICATION OF DYADIC RELATIONAL STYLES AND THEIR ASSOCIATION WITH KEY ATTITUDES AND BEHAVIORS.Mary Uhl-Bien and John M. MaslynMary Uhl-Bien and John M. In a direct test of the reciprocity continuum proposed by Liden, Sparrowe, & Wayne (1997), subordinate reports of the immediacy, equivalence and interest (self, mutual, other) components of reciprocity were subjected to cluster analysis. The resulting three clusters provide relative support for the continuum, with clusters emerging that are suggestive of negative, balanced, and generalized reciprocity. In slight contrast to the reciprocity continuum, mutual interest played a particularly relevant role in the clusters. The clusters were validated through comparison with existing measures of relationship quality (i.e., LMX), and show interesting relationships with a number of organizational outcomes including performance, citizenship, perceived organizational support, commitment, and job satisfaction. Theoretical and practical implications are discussed.FiguresReferencesRelatedDetails Vol. 2000, No. 1 Permissions Metrics in the past 12 months History Published online 13 December 2017 Published in print 1 August 2000 InformationCopyright of Academy of Management Journal is the property of Academy of Management and its content may not be copied or emailed to multiple sites or posted to a listserv without the copyright holder’s express written permission.
