- W2008519030 abstract "Abstract Two pilot plants for the treatment of raw sewage were operated in parallel to study the removal of the detergent builder nitrilotriacetic acid during primary sedimentation. With one nitrilotriacetic acid-free pilot plant acting as a control to the other, the effect of this builder on heavy metal removal has been examined over a range of hydraulic loadings selected to cover the range expected during normal operation of a sewage treatment works. Nitrilotriacetic acid was introduced at two concentrations of 15 and 30 mg litre−1 and at two variable loadings which varied around these concentrations in such a manner as to simulate the probable diurnal loading due to variations in usage. Removals of nitrilotriacetic acid between 16 and 40% have been observed and this appears to be the result of adsorption onto settleable solids. However, no correlation between suspended solids removal and nitrilotriacetic acid removal was found. Removals of lead, nickel and zinc were all significantly reduced in the presence of nitrilotriacetic acid, resulting in higher concentrations of these metals in the settled sewage." @default.
