- W2008525777 abstract "The course of the Reformation in Augsburg up to the Peace of Westphalia in 1648 was undoubtedly the most mouvementé of any imperial city. The shifts and turns that both council and commons were obliged to perform in the face of imperial Catholic pressure, first at the diet of Augsburg in 1530, then during the Interim between 1548 and 1552, leading to the Religious Peace of Augsburg in 1555, and later the upheavals of the Thirty Years War, when the city was variously occupied by Catholic imperial troops and a Swedish Protestant army, were matched by internal unrest and fluctuating confessional allegiances. The council’s policy of the ‘middle way’, at least until 1530, looks in retrospect less like a clever politique calculation than a despairing response to events which it imperfectly controlled. That only changed when the council set up a Reformation Committee in 1533 and finally introduced the Reformation as an act of public policy in 1537. The present volume complicates the picture further by offering case-studies of individual parishes, churches and congregations within the city, which demonstrate how variegated religious affiliation and ecclesiastical practice were. Rather than attempting to summarize an impossible wealth of detail, the following remarks identify the salient features which emerge." @default.
