- W2008678314 abstract "The IOPs of 118 infant and juvenile and 16 adult rhesus monkeys from the Cayo Santiago colony of the Caribbean Primate Research Center were measured with a floating-tip pneumatonometer; axial dimensions of the globe and lens were measured with an ultrasonic device and orbital dimensions with a dial caliper. In vivo orbital measurements were correlated with caliper and volumetric measurements of 49 skulls derived from the same colony. Comparable IOP data from a previous survey of the same population were included in some statistical analyses. IOP was found to be significantly and negatively correlated with age, decreasing steadily during the postnatal growth period (approximately 6 years) from an infant average of 20·6±4·5 mmHg to an adult average of 15·5±2·8 mmHg. Increase in axial length of the globe with age follows a typical mammalian growth curve which is related to IOP in that both IOP and rate of growth in axial length decrease with age. Orbital growth is, in turn, strongly correlated with growth of the globe. Yet, as a consequence of correlated age changes in globe size and IOP, scleral tension appears to remain essentially constant throughout the age range (3 months-22 years) studied here. Lens thickness was found to decrease from birth to approximately 6 years of age, and then to increase with age in the adult. These results imply that a high juvenile IOP may be required for rapid growth of the immature eye, and that lenticular changes are coordinated with growth of the globe and may contribute to the maintenance of emmetropia throughout postnatal development." @default.
