Methylene 1B1 was prepared in the desired vibrational state by photodissociation of ketene with a XeCl excimer laser (which yields “cold” CH21A1) followed by dye laser absorption; time-resolved fluorescence from the different vibrational states of the CH21B1 was observed and analyzed to obtain quenching rate constants ranging from 0.3×1010−10 cm3 molecule−1 s−1 (He+CH21B1 (0, 16, 0)) to 4.1×10−10 cm3 molecule−1 s−1 (Xe+CH21B1 (0, 18, 0)); these values are of the order of gas kinetics collisional rates. The quenching rate is thought to be controlled by internal conversion and singlet—triplet intersystem crossing that may be sensitive to the initial vibrational state coupling." @default.
