- W2008946303 abstract "THE letter sent by the prominent astrologer John Partridge on 24 April 1708 to his friend (and erstwhile Monmouth rebel) Isaac Manley, Postmaster General at Dublin, has been a source of amusement to readers since its publication in the Gentleman’s Magazine for March 1785, if not as soon as it arrived at Manley’s house in Dublin.1 John Partridge is remembered chiefly, of course, as the victim of Jonathan Swift’s Bickerstaff hoax, in which the Anglican cleric, posing as one Isaac Bickerstaff, predicted and then confirmed the death of the virulently Whiggish and low-church Partridge. Partridge’s letter to Manley had a simple function: ‘to tell he was alive’, as the endorsement on the Princeton Library copy has it.2 It also identifies ‘Bickerstaff’ as ‘Pettie’, or the Tory journalist William Pittis, as I have noted elsewhere in a discussion of the party political nature of early responses to Swift’s hoax.3 Another copy of the letter, in the Montagu collection in the Bodleian Library, indicates that a member of Manley’s family recognized the uniqueness of Partridge’s disavowal—which would certainly have become clear after the success of Swift’s hoax, and the related success of Addison and Steele’s perversion of the Bickerstaff persona in The Tatler." @default.
