- W2009011030 abstract "Abstract Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) testing results are used for a variety of purposes including compliance evaluations, risk assessments, and forensic evaluations. However, there are myriad sources of error associated with PAH results, including those stemming from laboratory practices as well as analytical equipment. For those using PAH results, understanding the origin of error in such measurements can lead to a better understanding of the significance of PAH results and a better design of PAH investigations. With respect to forensic evaluations, it is imperative to include an error evaluation with any investigation conducted. Such a practice will ensure that differences or distinctions used are real and not the result of the expected variation in the testing method used. This article is broken into three sections. The first section discusses the sample extraction process for soil, water, and air samples, the impact caused by different solvents and sample extract cleanup procedures. The second section discusses the operation of the common analytical instruments used for detecting and measuring PAHs, the choices available, their operation, and biases. The final section discusses the error associated with PAH analyses and ways of evaluating or managing the error to ensure that the final use of the data is justified based on sound scientific principles." @default.
