- W2009014061 abstract "Experiencing chronic pain seems to have a direct influence on the daily physical and psychosocial functions of adults with cerebral palsy (CP). Structured interviews assessed pain experiences and impact on function in 50 (25 male, 25 female) adults (M=39.62 years, SD 13.01) who had chronic CP-related pain. Most of the participants (64%) used a wheelchair. Pain intensity was reported on 11-point numerical rating scales and pain interference on a modified Brief Pain Inventory (BPI). Self-care, social activities, and recreational activities were added to the BPI to provide more information on participation. Worst pain intensity ratings were commonly moderate (M=5.18, SD 3.31, range 3-7), least pain intensity ratings were commonly low (M=1.42, SD 1.78, range 0-3), and average pain intensity ratings were mild-to-moderate (M=3.64, SD 2.78, range 2-6). Interference of daily functions on the BPI (M=28.12, SD 24.59, range 0-99), wherein a high score represents greater interference, was correlated with pain intensity over 5 (rs=.532, p=.01). Pain intensity and pain interference did not differ based on age. There was no gender difference for pain intensity and pain interference. Significant differences in interference between BPI physical and psychosocial functions were not found. Highest reported interference was with mobility and the lowest was with relations to others. Work and self-care activities were rated with relatively lower levels of interference. Pain of moderate intensity can be related to interference with activity performance and participation in adults with CP." @default.
