- W2009211574 abstract "A mathematical model simulating the surface hardening of steel by a laser beam is described, and the results obtained from computer calculations are discussed. The model is based on a finite difference approximation to the differential thermal energy equation which incorporates the latent heat of the solid state phase change. The main process parameters of the process, namely the power, duration, spot size and energy distribution of the beam, and the physical properties of the steel and of the absorbing coating, have all been incorporated into the model. Eutectoid steel with a fine pearlitic microstructure is used as an example. The program could be used in conjunction with experiments, to help determine the set of process variable values most appropriate for the production of a specified near-surface metallurgical microstructure in a given steel sample." @default.
